About this piece
The Smith Bottom Knock Swimmer 2 is a new-genre trout plug designed by Hiroyuki Motoyama to trigger strikes even from neutral or pressured fish. Its dense tungsten nose weight forces the lure to stand tail-up on the bottom, where it swings side-to-side with bottom-pumping and vibrates on a straight retrieve, imitating a small fish feeding on the bottom.
Key features
- High-density tungsten weight concentrated in the nose for vertical bottom-standing posture
- Tail buoyancy keeps the lure in an upright position when stationary on the bottom
- Bottom-pump retrieve produces a side-to-side swing action
- Twitching with slack line generates multi-directional swing (side to side, sometimes vertical)
- Straight retrieve creates a subtle wobble with slow tail-kicking
Best for
- Pressured or neutral trout in streams and managed fishing areas
- Bottom-contact fishing style when horizontal lures are ignored
- Clear to moderately stained water with steady or slow current
